27 April 1994

Nelson Mandela votes for the first time in his life.  Mr Mandela casts his vote at the Ohlange High School in Inanda in KwaZulu-Natal.  The school was started by the founding President of the African National Congress, John Langalibalele Dube.   It is South Africa's first non-racial democratic elections ever.  Many South Africans spend hours queuing to cast their votes.   It is a momentous day in the history of South Africa.

Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk (President of South Africa), jointly receive the Nobel Peace Prize of 1993.  It is awarded to them "for their work for the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime, and for laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa".  South Africa is proud of these two great men, working together for peace in our country.

Nelson Mandela is elected as deputy president of the African National Council (ANC).   Oliver Tambo is the president, a position he has served in since 1969.   Mr Mandela first joined the ANC in 1944, and at the time it was the oldest black political organisation in the country.  It is a proud day that he can finally serve as part of its leadership again after so many years in jail.

Today Nelson Mandela was released from prison after 27 years.  He walked out of the Victor Verster prison in Paarl with Winnie Mandela.  He was then driven to Cape Town where people gathered on the Grand Parade to hear him speak.   The route to Cape Town was lined by many happy supporters who cheered him on.  He stood on the balcony of the City Hall to address the approximately 50,000 people who had waited for hours to see him.
